Mark’s passion; which is connecting people; making the world more open; and doing more for the greater good, highly contributes to Facebook’s success. Plus, he encourages his workers to do
the same. “He got the technology bug from his father”, the author writes, and
then went on to develop himself in this line. Every program he created was
always addictive. He made sure the social graph he created through these
programs were authentic and transparent. And this truth continues to prove over
and over again that unless there’s a strong drive towards your future, it is
very unlikely that your dreams will come true.
A company’s purpose is what makes it unique from others and serves as a driving force even
in tough times. Apple’s story is one to note in this line. Facebook’s mission statement could have evolved, but its
purpose remains the same. Mark isn’t building this company to be sold someday,
he is building it to last. Facebook’s five values are to: focus on impact, be
fast, be bold, be open, and build social value. Facebook has something they call
“The Hacker Culture”, which means building something quickly or
testing the boundaries of what can be done.
Mark believes in these
two things; having a clear direction and bringing great people together who can
execute this. For the long-term success of any company, you need quality human
capital. This should be the chief concern of every leader. The author gave
examples of successful companies who are focusing on building the people; both the
employees and the customers. Companies like
Products
are very important and they remain in the minds of people over time. Facebook
has always been obsessed about creating products that last and are trustworthy
and make people want to come back for more. When he started Facebook, and the demand
for more schools to be included was high, he made sure to delay adding more
schools, because he didn’t want to handle more than he could. Learning from
Friendster, a trending social networking site which crashed due to this, he
watched out for too much success than he could handle, and the result was, amazing products.
The partnership is key to the success of every idea. Partners could be investors,
employees, vendors, spouses, and family members. The strongest type of
partnership exists when leaders share the same purpose, but bring different
things to the table. True collaboration is the result of many successful
businesses out there. The Warner bros., Walt Disney, Hewlett-Packard, Johnson
& Johnson, Apple Computers, Facebook, and several others out there. Humans usually have
a natural tendency to share ideas with like-minded people. Partners should have;
clear expectations. shared values and vision, mutual trust, fair exchange of values,
complementary strengths, commitment, and mutual respect.
“Zuckerberg is showing others the importance of the social graph and the
right path to online transparency. Some of us might not desire or accept it
right at this moment, but people change, and so do social norms.”, writes Ekaterina.
Facebook, borne out of the vision to see the world socially connected, could
have been borne by an inexperienced, introverted, and young entrepreneur. But,
no doubt, it is what it is today; multi-billion-dollar international cooperation.
The author ends with Henry Ford's words, “If you think you can or you think you
can’t, you’re right”.
